Penn State Abington is inviting the public to "Penn State Examines: The State of Health Care in America" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the Lares Building; a free dinner will be offered at 6 p.m. A panel of successful health care professionals will explore the issue from multiple perspectives and answer questions from the audience. The panelists' experience, along with their professional insights, will help others navigate this complex topic.
Sixty-six Penn State Abington students each will receive $50 vouchers to purchase textbooks thanks to the support of Abington faculty and staff, and the creative thinking of their colleagues. "Abington faculty and staff have a well-deserved reputation for truly caring about students in and out of the classroom," said Ross Brinkert, co-chairman of the Faculty and Staff Campaign. "This extends that commitment even further."
Penn State Abington THON kicked off fundraising for the 2013 IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon with a record-smashing weekend of canning that raised more than $8,300, beating the previous record by more than $2,000. THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world and engages more than 15,000 Penn State students across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Its goal is to conquer pediatric cancer by providing emotional and financial support to children, families, researchers and staff at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital through the Four Diamonds Fund.
If Alexia Hudson ever wants to become a stylist, she had better hope potential employers don't delve too deeply into her online identity. Why? Because her digital footprint reveals participation in some of the great fashion crimes of the 1990s.
There isn't anything inappropriate in the image, which a college friend had innocently posted on Facebook. But Hudson, a reference librarian at Penn State Abington, showed it to illustrate to a group of first-semester students that their online identities can't be erased and can impact their lives for years to come.
The public is invited to Penn State Abington for the fall 2012 Out of the Box film series, which highlights the struggles and sacrifice for social justice in Latin America. Karen Bettez Halnon, associate professor of sociology at Abington, will moderate the screenings and discussions, which are a component of the upper-level seminar course, Liberation Theology (Sociology 497).
Paintings by Emily Steinberg, lecturer in art at Penn State Abington, are being exhibited through Oct. 27 in the historic Philadelphia Crane Arts Building.
Cherry blossom trees, an icon of the friendship between Japan and the United States, also are a fitting symbol for a relationship that bloomed decades ago and whose roots grow stronger each year between Penn State Abington and Seinan Gakuin University in Japan. This friendship culminated in an English immersion course that recently brought 12 Seinan students halfway around the world to Abington for two weeks of learning and international exchange.
City Rhythm Orchestra & Ray Gelato will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, at Penn State Abington. The 15-piece big band will present "Jump, Jive & Wail" with vocals by Steve Ritrovato and Vicki Woodlyn. Popular European singer-saxophonist Ray Gelato also will perform with the band.
Penn State Abington has earned a place on the 2013 Military Friendly Schools list, which honors institutions that provide a supportive environment for service members, veterans, and spouses as students to achieve academic success.
