Majors at Penn State Abington

Degrees earned at Penn State are nationally recognized.

You have the option of starting and completing 25 undergraduate majors at Abington or starting 275 majors at Abington and completing them at another Penn State campus, including University Park Campus.

Accounting

This program prepares students for careers in a wide variety of accounting roles, including corporate, auditing, government, not-for-profit, and more. Students also receive a sound foundation for the pursuit of graduate studies in accounting or related fields.

American Studies

This program explores American culture from multiple perspectives and develops high-level speaking, writing, and analytic abilities.

Art

Art majors are prepared for professional careers or continuing graduate study in fine art, graphic design, industrial design, architecture, fashion, and other visual disciplines.

Biology

The Division of Science and Engineering offers three options of the Biology degree.

  • The General Biology Option gives students broad training in biology that is excellent preparation for careers in many areas in biology and related fields.
  • The Genetics and Developmental Biology Option prepares students for careers in biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, and graduate study in cellular and molecular biology and related areas.
  • The Vertebrate Physiology Option prepares students for careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and graduate study in biomedical research.

Business

Students can focus their degree on a key business sector through the choice of an 18-credit option in one of the following:

  • Accounting
  • Business Analytics
  • Financial Services
  • Health Services  
  • Management/Marketing
  • An individualized course of study.

Computer Science

This program provides students with a firm grounding in the fundamentals of this in-demand discipline.

Corporate Communication

This program focuses on preparing students to craft strategic messaging for diverse audiences.

Criminal Justice (B.A., B.S.)

This major includes study in law enforcement, courts, and corrections individually and as components of a system, plus work in theories of crime causation, and crime control policy.

Cybersecurity Analytics and Operations

This major prepares students to meet industry demands for experts with the knowledge and skills to conduct cybersecurity, privacy, and risk management analysis of modern computer systems.

Elementary and Early Childhood Education

This program, as with all Penn State undergraduate teacher education programs, is designed to provide students with the experiences necessary to become certified teachers.

Engineering

The Engineering degree with Multidisciplinary Engineering Design option (GE-MED) incorporates advanced coursework in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and engineering design to produce innovative engineers specialized in systems design and integration.

English

The English major provides highly marketable skills in communication and critical thinking. Through reading and writing a wide range of texts, English majors learn about subjects such as health, business, politics, history, culture, and social justice. The major prepares them for successful careers in areas such as publishing, law, web writing, public relations, medicine, and education.

Finance

The major prepares students for careers in corporate finance, investment and portfolio management, banking, public finance, and international finance. The major also prepares students who want to pursue graduate study in finance.

Health Humanities (B.A., B.S.)

As a student in our unique bachelor of arts or bachelor of science programs in Health Humanities, you will learn to think critically about the complex social and cultural issues that define how we understand health and medicine and prepare for careers in a variety of related fields.

History

Students in this program will study with faculty who conduct research on a wide geographic and temporal range, from ancient to modern times.

Information Technology

This degree is a new broad based technical and theoretical degree that will prepare students to implement and use information technology to realize a variety of goals within and between all types of organizations and businesses.

Integrative Arts

Students may integrate several areas of the arts, such as theater, music, film, or the visual arts, or combine one or more arts areas with other disciplines such as business, English, history, psychology, or sociology.

Multidisciplinary Studies

Formulate a theme you wish to explore and receive specialized training for a career of your choosing. This major has many potential applications, from business to law and health care fields.

Nursing: RN to B.S.N. Completion

A program for nurses who have previously earned either an associate degree or a diploma in nursing.

Project and Supply Chain Management

This major provides students with an opportunity to develop the quantitative and interpersonal skills necessary to design and operate today’s complex management systems. 

Psychological and Social Sciences (B.A., B.S.)

Choose our B.A. or B.S. option, both of which require an internship to emphasize the application of classroom knowledge to real-world settings.

Race and Ethnic Studies

This major is unique to Penn State Abington and supports students in developing skills to thrive in the 21st century. Coursework prepares students for fields that include education, law, history, communications, government, sociology, psychology, social work, and business. 

Recreation, Park and Tourism Management

Improving the quality of life and place for others and transforming health and wellness through engaging life experiences.

Rehabilitation and Human Services

The RHS major trains students interested in improving quality of life for persons impacted by disabilities.

Science 

In addition to core courses in mathematics, statistics, chemistry, physics, and biology, students can choose from the following three options:

  • Life Science  
  • General Science  
  • Mathematical Sciences  

Create your own major at Penn State Abington

Under the guidance of faculty advisers, students in the Create Your Own Major program design unique courses of study, exploring multiple disciplines and perspectives on specific areas of study not available in traditional departments.
