"There’s a culture in most workplaces in the U.S. of that being a good thing, to work through your vacation, whereas in other advanced countries that’s kind of frowned upon.”

— Lonnie Golden, professor of economics at Penn State Abington, in an interview with the Huffington Post. In Golden's own research, he has found that some workers use presenteeism, or longer work hours, as a strategy for avoiding layoffs and snagging promotions.
