Deciding to do writing as my minor was probably the most important choice I made as a student at Penn State Abington. I was closely mentored by Abington’s writing professors, who truly helped me hone my writing skills through not only their many classes but their guidance as well. The mentoring, as well as the other classes I took for Abington’s writing program, fully prepared me to be a contemporary writer and to apply the skills I learned in a modern job setting. I feel as though these skills set me apart and prepared me well for a career today.
My decision to add a Writing Minor to my undergraduate studies was not initially considered on my own behalf with deep thought, but I ultimately found myself at the end of my degree having been immensely gratified by what it was able to offer me. So much of the world around us relies on the communication skills one possesses, concerning both formal and informal endeavors. The written method of conveying one’s sense of self-perspective, the ideas rooted in the means of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and the methodologies of critical thinking and conveyance of methodical analysis matter even more in this modern day than they ever have before. This minor, in conjunction with the other studies of my major, allowed me to grow my own professional and interpersonal communication skills, in addition to giving me the necessary foundation of analytical and critical-thinking capabilities to put me on the right track for when I made the transition to enter the next stage of my professional and personal livelihood.
