ABINGTON, Pa. — Penn State Abington is launching a new initiative this summer for incoming first-year students to strengthen their foundational math skills in advance of their first math course in the fall. The free Math Advancement and Placement Success (MAPS) program, offered remotely through the campus Chaiken Center for Student Success, aims to prepare students for their math placement test/retest, known as ALEKS, and boost their confidence in their math abilities.
During regular Zoom sessions, students will be paired with experienced peer tutors who will guide them through key topics featured on ALEKS. This includes essential skills in algebra, trigonometry and calculus — ranging from fractions, decimals and integers to more advanced topics like domain and range, word problems, polynomials, quadratic trinomials, laws of exponents, angles, derivatives and others.
By reinforcing these concepts over the summer, students can aim for a stronger ALEKS test/retest score, opening the door to a strong academic performance in their fall Math course, be it MATH 21, 22, 26, 100 or 140.
"Don't hesitate to contact me to learn how MAPS can support you. We want to set you up for success now, which may save you time and money later if you have difficulties in your first math course," said Dennis Millan, associate director of the Chaiken Center.
"MAPS is one more initiative Abington and the Chaiken Center are implementing to invest in our students’ success from day one," he continued.
Incoming first year students are encouraged to learn more about MAPS by emailing Millan, associate director of the center at [email protected].
