ABINGTON, Pa. — Penn State Abington invites the community to attend "Creative Peace Building: A Communities of Care Workshop" on Monday, Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in Lares Building, Penn State Abington, 1600 Woodland Road. Registration is required by Jan. 23.
Attendees will explore the multifaceted nature of peace and steps toward developing and maintaining "Communities of Care" in a world rife with conflict. Following a light dinner, creative arts therapist Mariya Keselman-Mekler will invite participants to explore solutions to challenges that arise when varying perspectives on peace exist within communities. Attendees will leave with tools to begin creating communities of care in their own spheres. All are welcome.
Keselman-Mekler is a counseling and program manager, a creative arts therapist at KleinLife and a mobile therapist at Horizons Behavioral Health. She has worked in medical, psychiatric and community settings with individuals who experienced medical, mental health, complex trauma, collective trauma, genocide, persecution and acculturation concerns. She uses intersectional and social justice lenses, and a person-centered, trauma-informed approach in her practice.
This free event is presented by the Penn State Abington Office of Inclusive Excellence.
"Creative Peace Building" is the first workshop in the Communities of Care series. On Feb, 29, the event will focus on Black history and Communities of Care, and the March 25 workshop will highlight women's history, disabilities and Communities of Care.
