Program Overview

Penn State Abington and KleinLife have partnered to provide a STEM-based high school enrichment program for KleinLife families and neighborhood high school students. This collaborative effort aims to enhance educational opportunities and outcomes for high school students in the Northeast Philadelphia community.

STEM Program


After-school STEM workshops are offered to high school students in grades 9 to 12 to enhance their STEM skills. These seven-week workshops emphasize project-based skills, design, computer science, and engineering. Examples of workshop topics include programming with electronics, sensors and robotics, Python coding, and entrepreneurship engineering. 


Eligibility
Any High School student with strong interest in MATH is eligible to participate. The initial math level is determined by a placement test.

MATH 1: Monday & Wednesday - Lesson Time: 4:00pm- 6:00pm, (October 15, 2025) 

The course is designed for 9th to 12th grade students and covers Algebra I and elements of Algebra II. Students are required to take a placement test.

MATH 2: Tuesday & Thursday- Lesson Time: 4:00pm- 6:00pm, (October 15, 2025) 

The course is designed for 9th to 12th grade students and covers Algebra II and Trigonometry. Students are required to take a placement test. Students who successfully completed MATH 1 are automatically eligible for MATH 2.  Completion of MATH 2 prepares students for the rigor of the AP and IB courses, as well as college level courses, such as Statistics, Computer Science I and Calculus.

STEM II Introduction to Electronics: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 pm, January 20- March 5, 2026

The course is offered to students in grades 7 to 12, covering the basics of Electronics principles.  Students will learn about electricity and electric circuits. They will gain a hands-on understanding of electrical components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, LEDs, transistors, potentiometers, thermistors, photoresistors and more.  Using breadboards, they will gain experience building circuits of varying complexity to create proof of concepts for their designs. They will also be introduced to the use of Computer Aided Electronic design using the Tinkercad website.  This course also includes a module on Solar Home Electrical systems and how the principles used for simple circuit design are applicable to larger systems that can power an entire home.

STEM III Python Gaming: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8pm, March 10- April 30, 2026. 

The course is offered to students in grades 7 to 12 with the overall course providing the basics of Python programming language, as well as some techniques that could be used to develop games. This seven-week course will introduce programming with a fun twist.  Throughout the course, the students will learn various aspects of the internal representation of information within a computer.  This course covers Graphics, simple animation, and basic programming skills. The students will be able to write several fun game programs, including a dice game, tic-tac-toe, and an encryption code game.  The student exercises and learning experiences are through hands-on assignments as well as fun challenges with the exercises and lessons.

STEM I Programming Electronics: Tuesday and Thursday, October 21 - December 18, 2025

This course exposes the students to more complex circuits which they will build themselves using raw components, wires, breadboards, and an Arduino microcontroller. The student needs no prior programming experience. We will use kits which are designed to teach students how to build a series of projects that perform multiple functions using sensors (distance, motion, temperature, light, etc.) and actuators (motors, lights, sounds, displays). The students will become familiar with the C++ programming language by using and modifying example code provided by the vendors. The overall focus of this program is to immerse the students in the world of electronics all around them. Everything that we use in this high-tech world is a combination of components that are controlled through different processing means.  Students who complete this course will have a stronger understanding of how these parts really work.  If a student has taken a similar course with us before, he/she will have an opportunity to work on new and more interesting projects.

Dual Enrollment


Dual enrollment courses are provided onsite at KleinLife and are taught by Penn State faculty. Students will earn college credit after successfully completing courses.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Students must be in grades 11 and 12 and in good academic standing (GPA of 2.8 or higher or with a recommendation from their high school)
  • Completion of pre-requisite levels of math competency (i.e. Algebra II or higher)
  • A short entrance interview

Tuition for dual enrollment courses is offered at a discounted rate of approximately 50%. Financial need-based scholarships may be available.

Dual Enrollment Programs

Penn State Abington will offer two college courses in Spring 2026 

Students with solid mastery of Algebra II and Trigonometry (pre-calculus) are eligible to apply. Students who successfully completed or are currently enrolled in Penn State @KleinLife's MATH 2 program are also eligible.

PHYS 211 (4 credits) - General Physics: Mechanics:  Calculus-based introduction to classical mechanics, including such topics as: measurement, dimensional analysis, motion in one-dimension, vectors, motion in 2 and 3 dimensions, relative and circular motion, force and dynamics, Newton's Laws, friction, kinetic energy, work, potential energy, energy conservation, systems of particles, center of mass and momentum, elastic and inelastic collisions, rotation (moments of inertia), rolling motion, torque, angular momentum, static equilibrium, gravitational force and Kepler's laws, gravitational potential energy, oscillations.
 
Dates: Jan 27 - May 7, 2026

MATH 140 (4 credits) - Calculus with Analytic Geometry I: Differential calculus topics include derivatives and their applications to rates of change, related rates, linearization, optimization, and graphing techniques. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, relating differential and integral calculus begins the study of Integral Calculus. Antidifferentiation and the technique of substitution is used in integration applications of finding areas of plane figures and volumes of solids of revolution.

Penn State Abington will offer two college courses in Fall 2025

STAT 200 (4 credits)- Elementary Statistics: This course introduces the basic concepts of probability and statistical inference, including common graphical and numerical data summaries; notions of sampling from a population of interest, including the sampling distribution of a statistic; construction and interpretation of confidence intervals, test statistics, and p-values.

September 16- December 18, 2025

Eligibility: Students must be currently enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade in a local high school and able to demonstrate adequate academic preparation, as evidenced by a >2.8 GPA, success in AP or Honors courses, and/or a letter of support from their guidance counselor and/or teacher. 

CMPSC 131 (3 credits) - Programming and Computation I: This course introduces the fundamental concepts and processes of solving computational problems through the design, implementation, testing and evaluation of efficient and robust computer programs.

September 22- December 17, 2025
