Physical Education Building

Rendering of new Athletics Building exterior

A transformative makeover of Penn State Abington's Physical Education Building is underway with a targeted completion date of September 2027. The $25 million project includes a full renovation of the existing 46,483-square-foot building plus 6,017 square feet of new infill construction, with an expected opening of fall 2027.

The design honors the building's existing concrete-framed architecture while meeting modern campus needs, bringing fitness spaces toward the building's exterior to fill them with natural light and create an energetic presence on campus.

Key Elements

  • A renovated gym, auxiliary gym, weight and training rooms with team spaces designed to support student-athletes and coaching staff.
  • The second floor will feature fitness and cardio equipment along the exterior of the building to maximize natural light.
  • A redesigned main entrance and welcoming public commons area with outdoor seating and improved campus connectivity.
  • Upgraded locker rooms, restrooms, and public spaces to meet current accessibility standards.
  • Fully air-conditioning the building will significantly expand its capacity for summer use and events.

Memorial Field Turf Field Replacement

Targeted Completion: July 17, 2026*

Construction began in early June 2026 to replace the artificial turf field at Memorial Field, a shared-use facility open to Penn State Abington and its NCAA Division III teams, the Abington School District, and the community.

About Memorial Field

  • NEW Artificial turf with track
  • Field house
  • Tennis courts, softball field, practice field

The initial $5 million renovation of Memorial Field was completed in 2015 after Penn State Abington signed a 25-year lease, renewable for two more decades, with the Abington School District. It came at no cost to the school district or local taxpayers.

Penn State Abington shares maintenance and security with the school district, which administers a permitting process for outside organizations to use the site.
