Arriving to campus:  It is recommended that students make flight arrangements to arrive no later than two days before orientation to adjust and enjoy the orientation activities.  Any return flight arrangements should be scheduled after the last date of final exams.  Check the Academic Calendar.

Tuition & Costs

Tuition and Fees: International students need to be aware that tuition is due on a different timetable than domestic students. However, once you are on campus, you will be able to finalize the process through your Penn State Access account.

Health Insurance & Immunization

Mandatory Health Insurance:  All international students in F-1 and J-1 status studying at Penn State must have health insurance for the entire period of study at Penn State.

Penn State is moving to United Healthcare Student Resources as the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) carrier for the 2017-2018 academic year. The annual rate for undergraduate international students is $2,444 per academic year. The insurance premium must be paid directly to United Healthcare Student Resources at the time of enrollment and can be paid by credit card or electronic check. Immunization Records: All incoming undergraduate students must submit proof of immunizations prior to their arrival on campus.

Required immunizations for all incoming students: Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)

The University Health Services (UHS) requires:

  • Two doses of Measles (Rubeola), two doses of Mumps and one dose of Rubella OR
  • Two doses of the MMR vaccine OR
  • Results from a blood test results showing immunity

Once you get all the required vaccines, please download the Penn State Immunization Verification Form, give it to your doctor, ask him/her to fill it out and sign it for you.

When you complete the immunization verification form, please use this link to submit your records.


New International Student Orientation Program: During orientation, you will complete government document requirements, schedule courses, and become familiar with the campus. See International Students Orientation page.

International Student Orientation is mandatory for newly-admitted students the Fall semester and includes:

  • Non-immigration advising sessions
  • Mandatory document check-in on iStart
  • Information about academic expectations & campus resources
  • Academic advising appointment & course scheduling
  • Opening a U.S. bank account & Purchasing a cell phone plan
  • Social activities & opportunities to get to know other students

Fall 2017 International Student Orientation Schedule:

  • Tuesday, August 8: Lions Gate and off-campus apartment move-in day
  • Thursday, August 10 - Tuesday, August 15: International Student Orientation.
