The certificate program is offered in a convenient hybrid format combining class time and online coursework. Teachers attend classes at Penn State Abington beginning Spring 2021.
- A six-course (16 credit) program for educators who wish to be ESL-certified instructors in Pennsylvania
- A hybrid class format for busy educators
- All classes held at Penn State Abington
- All participants must hold a valid Pennsylvania Instruction I or II certificate
Approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for ESL Program Specialist Certification.

*Candidates take this course at the end of the program, after completing EDUC 466, EDUC 467, EDUC 468 and EDUC 469.

Learn and integrate curricular, instructional, and assessment theories and practices into the elementary/secondary classroom setting to promote language and literacy development.

EDUC 475 (3 credits) ESL Leadership, Research, and Advocacy*
This capstone course (EDUC 475) requires candidates to conduct action research or a literature review while representing their role as ESL instructional leaders, education researchers, and ELL advocates who support the social, cultural, and political rights of ELLs and their families. (Both EDUC 475 and EDUC 495 run concurrently)

EDUC 466 N (3 credits) Foundations for Teaching ESL
Gain a critical understanding and appreciation for language diversity and culture while enhancing knowledge and skills necessary to work with culturally and linguistically diverse learners, their families, and their communities.

EDUC 468 (3 credits) Language Acquisition for ESL Teachers
Explore first and second language learning, socio-cultural contexts and learner variables, and the issues related to cognition and developmental; psycholinguistics.
