Behind the Scenes of "The American Revolution," A Film by Ken Burns

"The American Revolution," A Film by Ken Burns Front Cover Image

Featuring Friederike Baer, professor of history who served as a historical advisor and appears in the film

Preview “The American Revolution,” the much-anticipated new documentary from Oscar nominee Ken Burns, before exploring the historical significance and contemporary relevance of this pivotal period in our nation's history through insights from three leading scholars.

  • Friederike Baer, a professor of history at Penn State Abington whose scholarship focuses on the American Revolution and the Early American Republic. She served as a historical advisor to Burns’ team, and her expert analysis is featured in the film. Baer is the author of the award-winning book Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War.

  •  Ricardo A. Herrera, senior historian at the George Washington Leadership Institute and retired professor of military history at the U.S. Army War College. He is an award-winning historian and author of Feeding Washington’s Army: Surviving the Valley Forge Winter of 1778.

  • Philip Mead, founding chief historian and director of Curatorial Affairs at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. His scholarship bridges the gap between academic history and public storytelling through the development of the intellectual framework for museum exhibitions, films, digital interactives, and galleries.

  • Moderator: Kenny Cooper, reporter, WHYY, the public media organization serving Southeastern Pennsylvania.

The panel discussion and Q&A with the audience will be followed by a light reception.

Co-sponsored by WPSU, a PBS and NPR member station serving Central Pennsylvania
