Prepare students to teach the biological sciences in secondary school environment.
Responding to a critical need for well-trained science teachers, Penn State Abington is partnering with the University's nationally recognized College of Education to offer a degree in secondary science education—a degree that can be completed entirely at the Abington campus.
Since the shortage of secondary biology teachers is greatest in urban schools, Penn State Abington's proximity to the diverse Philadelphia region makes it the ideal location to offer this degree. Just as important, opportunities for required field experiences are abundant in our community.
Enrollment in this program provide two distinct paths:
- Elect to earn Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Penn State's College of Education with a Biological Science option, or
- Earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Science through Penn State Abington's Life Science option, with education certification.
Both paths provide ample opportunities for undergraduate science research with award-winning senior faculty.
Those who complete either degree will meet all of the academic requirements for the Instructional I certificate for teaching biology at the secondary-school level, issued by Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Some graduates of the program may wish to advance their careers as secondary education administrators.
