Behind the Scenes: Making Magic for the Philadelphia International Flower Show

Timing, lighting, plants and plans are major factors for forcing plants for the Philadelphia International Flower Show each year. Meadowbrook Farm has perfected this science and art. This presentation will bring you through the year–from preparation to presentation– and will cover the ups and downs of what it takes to make plants bloom and grow for the first week in March each year! Abington Art Center: Solo Series
Four regional contemporary artists will be showing simultaneous solo exhibitions, one in each of Abington Art Center’s galleries. The abstract landscapes of Cynthia Back (Lansdowne, PA) use fragments of prints and paintings combined with gouache to make sophisticated and intriguing collages. Mickie Rosen (Elkins Park, PA) coined the term "photage" to describe her mixed media photo composites. Bruce Campbell (Philadelphia, PA) uses photography and projection to create his sculptures which he calls "part diary excerpt, part socio-political yearning." Ceramic artist Jill Allen (Philadelphia, PA) will exhibit her small ceramic and wire sculptures.

Friday Night Film Series: The Red Shoes

The restored version of this beloved dance film has created a major stir in the cinematic world. Come see the film in its original glory as it explores the mesmerizing world of ballet. The film is based on the career of Sergei Diaghilev, master of the famed Ballet Russe, with Anton Walbrook as the impresario and the luminous Moira Shearer as his obsession.

The Fourth Annual Bertha Lear Student Art Exhibition
Join us as students share their works of art with the college community and compete for four recognition awards. The top award, the Bertha Lear Purchase Award for Best in Show honors the most outstanding work in the show which then becomes a part of the growing permanent Abington College collection. The public is welcome to visit the exhibition during library hours from April 1-April 25.

Friday Night Film Series: The English Patient

Experience a masterful evocation of the loyalties, betrayals, and passions exposed during WW II in North Africa. A sumptuous production directed by Anthony Minghella, the film has garnered much praise and many awards, among them the Oscar for Best Film. The exceptional cast is led by Ralph Fiennes, Kristen Scott Thomas, and Juliette Binoche.

An Afternoon with the Arts—Opera Lecture Series: La Traviata

Once again Verdi's great opera will thrill you. Focused on the doomed love affair between the beautiful Parisian courtesan Violetta and the enamored young nobleman Alfredo, this operatic masterpiece brims with many of Verdi's most glorious arias. This work is definitely one of the highlights of the opera repertoire. Light refreshments served during intermission.

Spring Theater Showcase:
Canterbury Tales
Six of Chaucer’s wild and bawdy tales will be presented on the Sutherland stage in this clever, contemporary version of his literary masterpiece. If you remember these tales from high school as being dull and boring, this show will definitely change your mind.
Using movement, music and lots of comedy, the modern pilgrims bring to life deceitful wives, philandering men, greedy and murderous brothers, old crones and seductive dancing girls in what promises to be a funny and memorable evening.

Old York Road Symphony: An Afternoon with the Pops
This program is funded by the Sally Leah Reinitz Endowment for the Arts
For 77 years, the Old York Road Symphony has entertained audiences in Montgomery County—and now it will grace the Penn State Abington stage for the very first time. From the exciting overture to a rousing finale, this program of light classical works and Broadway tunes is sure to brighten your Sunday afternoon. The program includes works by Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Andrew Lloyd Webber and others, plus songs from Broadway hits, West Side Story, Wicked, A Chorus Line and more. Free admission. An Evening Under the Stars with the Eric Mintel Jazz Quartet
This program is co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Jenkintown
Join us for an evening of fresh air, sweet melodies and memorable fun as the acclaimed Eric Mintel Jazz Quartet performs classic jazz. The quartet features Eric Mintel on piano, Nelson Hill on alto sax, flute and soprano sax, Dave Antonow on electric bass and Dave Mohn on drums. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets.
