Penn State Abington Hosts SaturnFest 2005

Penn State Abington will bring the planet Saturn into focus at SaturnFest 2005 on Friday, January 14, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Woodland Building on campus.

This free educational event is an opportunity for the public to get a first-hand look at NASA's multi-million dollar Cassini-Huygens satellite mission to Saturn. Visitors to SaturnFest 2005 will see live satellite images broadcast as a probe descends into the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. Other activities include presentations exploring the mission, a visual demonstration of the atmosphere of Titan using chemical gases, and two workshops where participants can build models of the planet Saturn and the Cassini-Huygens satellite. A central lobby area will be open for a variety of informative displays, a robotics demonstration, giveaways, and other exhibits and information. Refreshments will be served.

Coordinating the event is Dr. Ann Schmiedekamp, associate professor of physics at Penn State Abington and a NASA Ambassador, one of only 300 in the United States. Dr. Schmiedekamp has given numerous presentations on space exploration and astronomy to public audiences of all ages.

This family event includes hands-on activities for students in grades 2 through 9. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
