KASSP – PENN STATE ABINGTON ANNOUNCES JOINT PROJECT
The Korean American Senior Services of Pennsylvania (KASSP) and Penn State Abington have formally announced a joint undertaking to conduct a nurse aide training program with vocational English as a second language.
Im Ja Choi, KASSP Founder and Executive Director, said that the training program is a 10-week course (266 hours), which was developed to bring more Asian American, especially newly-settled immigrants, into the health career track.
The training program has two (2) component courses:
1) 5-week (132 hours) Vocational English as Second Language (VESL) class
2) 5-week (134 hours) nurse aide course include two weeks of clinical training.
The language course, which will be a prerequisite class, will develop English literacy skills of students with focus on effective communication in the healthcare/medical environment. The nurse aide course will enable students to learn the principles and procedures focusing on basic human needs and care of the elderly.
The VESL class will be held at Penn State Abington and taught by Penn State teachers; the nurse aide course will be taught by licensed instructor hired by KASSP. Students will also have the opportunity to i ntegrate skills and concepts they learned in the classroom through hands on clinical experience at the Rydal Park Nursing Home. After completion of the training program, upon passing the examination, students will be qualified to work as nurse aides in long term care facilities, home health setting, and hospitals.
Schedule for the pilot training program are as follows:
Submission of application: November 23 – December 16, 2005
Interview of students: December 19 – 23, 2005
Start of language course: January 9, 2006
End of language course: February 10, 2006
Start of nurse aide course: February 13, 2006
End of nurse aide course: March 17, 2006
