Short description of any research interests:
History and development of the English language; children’s literature; caricature and ethnic stereotyping in visual and written argument
Publications:
My published work has been primarily journalistic, extensively appearing in both newspapers and related magazines. While this body of work includes features, interviews, news stories and columns, I have also published poetry and children’s stories in British and Australian magazines. I have also published illustrations and many photographs.
Interest:
Reading has always been my virtual reality—my alternate universe.
I have a reader’s crush on Patrick O’Brian, George Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain, Robert Frost, Mary Oliver, Shakespeare,Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Jane Austen—not to mention authors of children’s books: J.K. Rowling, E. Nesbit, James Barrie, and Beatrix Potter. I improve my vocabulary by reading the London Times and TLS, and writers William Buckley and Bernard Levin.
Other than that, I can’t do without certain other raisons d’etre: good films, la bella lingua, classical guitar, civil company, travel in Scotland and England , tin clockwork toys—especially robots.
Words of Wisdom:
I will always feel like I’m angle parked in a parallel universe, so my words of wisdom can be summed up in a few quite simple phrases: Think about it; Pick words like flowers; Warning: room for improvement; Always have a Plan B, C, D…etc.
Why did I choose those words? Ashleigh Brilliant, my favorite philosopher said: “It’s a good thing I’m going so slow; I could be going in the wrong direction.”
