English Degree

The Program

Why major in English? Because it offers a deep and broad understanding of one of the world's most important bodies of writing: literature in the English language from medieval times to the present -- from Old English verse to American rap. As an English major, you will explore what it is to be human and learn that others share your experiences more than you may have thought. You will investigate how people from dramatically different cultures view themselves and their place in the universe.

What's more, you will develop skills in critical thinking, writing, reading, and the analysis and synthesis of information that can make you highly marketable in our information-driven society. Our Career Development Office can help you with information on internships in many diverse fields.

Academic Choices

Specialization within Abington's English faculty include such fields as twentieth-century American literature, Renaissance and seventeenth-century British literature, the African American short story, Victorian fiction and autobiography, Irish drama, hip-hop culture, James Joyce, and professional editing and writing. In addition, the English faculty collectively teaches a range of topics from creative writing to Chaucer to popular American culture. Once enrolled as an English major, you will work closely with professional academic and faculty advisers who will guide you in creating an academic plan. You may wish to choose a complementary minor, such as Business, History, Psychology, or American Studies. You may also wish to choose the Publishing Emphasis within the English major. See the Publishing Emphasis Checksheet.
