New Student Day at Abington kicks off with Academic Convocation
Penn State Abington’s New Student Day is always a busy, exciting, and fun-filled day for the incoming freshman. Many activities are planned to help new students find their way around the wooded campus and meet-and-greet their fellow classmates. This year’s festivities will start on an academic note as Penn State Abington revives the tradition of the Academic Convocation—a formal academic opening of the semester. See schedule.
After the procession of faculty in regalia, Dr. Karen Wiley Sandler, chancellor of Penn State Abington, will address the students and faculty. Gabriela Vazquez, president of the student government, as well as Dr. Debra Casey, assistant professor of business and the 2009 Faculty Convocation Speaker, will also address the freshmen class of 2013.
Just who is the class of 2013? Approximately 900 new students will be walking the paths of the Abington campus this fall as members of the class of 2013. Forty-three percent (385) are female. The majority of freshmen are from Pennsylvania (825), but four are coming all the way from California. There will also be an air of internationalism on campus as ten students from China, India, Korea, and Taiwan are enrolled in classes.
Following the Academic Convocation, New Student Day will continue with fun “ice breaker” activities on the Intramural Fields and college-life jokes from comedian Michael Dean Ester in Sutherland Auditorium. All faculty and staff are invited to join the new students for a Community Barbeque at 1:15 p.m. by the Duck Pond.
