Test Prep - Preparing for College

Penn State is pleased to offer courses on some of the issues students and parents face in preparing for college. We invite you to attend any of these informative classes.

Study Skills for Success for the High School Student and Upcoming College Student -
What High School Students and Parents Can Do Together to Succeed

This workshop is for parents and students. Whether you are a high school student or starting college in the fall, study skills are essential for your success and having the support of parents even more so. With this workshop, everyone will learn the skills necessary for high school and college success. Topics include test-taking and note-taking techniques, practical methods for approaching objective and essay tests, efficient studying, writing and composing effective prose.

Introduction to College Applications 101

The college application process can seem overwhelming. This session will offer time-tables and organizational tips as well as a detailed examination of the Common Application and the two required essays. Sample supplemental applications from various schools will be available for viewing. Other topics will include: supplemental applications, supplementary materials, creating a résumé, and teacher recommendations.

Getting Into College: Planning Begins in 9th and 10th Grades

Getting into college is more competitive than ever! Find out what you need to know to demystify the college application process. Topics include: What makes a stellar applicant and how can my child become one?-How are grades and standardized test scores generally weighted by different types of colleges?-How can we create a résumé to include with the application?-How do we develop a balanced and realistic list of target schools? You will receive a packet of information, including a scheduling calendar, helpful reminders, recommended web sites, books, and summer activity lists. This is a seminar for parents and students in grades 9 and 10.

Being Proactive about Your College Search and Application Process, a Workshop Designed for the B Student

This program targets 10th and 11th graders who are beginning their college search. Discuss strategies to target appropriate schools and "stand out from the crowd" so you can improve your chances of admission.

Withdrawing from a Course

If you must withdraw from a course, please notify the Professional Development Office in writing at least 48 hours in advance of the start of the course. Your course fee will be refunded minus a $25 processing fee for each course cancellation. After the start of a course, no refund is issued.

In person: Register in Room 122 Sutherland, Monday through Friday, 8am - 5pm and in Room 121 Sutherland, Monday through Thursday, 5pm - 9pm.

Registration confirmations will be e-mailed. On the confirmation please note your Penn State identification number. This number will be necessary for all future registrations, correspondence or inquiries.

Course Cancellations

Courses may be canceled or postponed by the University due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If a course is canceled, registrants are contacted, and a full refund issued.
