Nutrition in Aging: Understanding and Addressing the Changing Nutritional Needs of the Aging Population

Who should attend?
Anyone who works with people in acute care, assisted living, home, and long term care, including hospital and nursing home administrators, social workers, nurses, certified nursing assistants, rehabilitation therapists, staff educators, and other direct care staff.

Program Description:

This seminar will review the many ways in which nutrition plays a role in successful aging. It is designed to provide persons working with the elderly an understanding of factors that affect nutritional status as well as changing nutritional requirements. It will review nutrition assessment techniques and current strategies to address common nutrition problems.

Objectives:

• Recognize age-related body composition changes and aging factors that affect nutritional status
• Understand nutritional requirements of the elderly
• Review side effects of declining nutritional status
• Practice assessing nutritional status of this population
• Review current dietary guidelines and appropriate dietary therapies

Instructor:

Stacie Kisver, MPH, RD, CDE, LDN.
Stacie works as a clinical dietitian and instructor of nutrition. She is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator and holds a Masters Degree in Public Health. Ms. Kisver has more than 10 years of experience in providing nutritional care for the senior population, working in acute care, residential and wellness settings. She has taught numerous credit and non-credit courses for professionals, students, and patients, including many seminars on nutrition across the spectrum of aging. Ms. Kisver is a recent instructor for Penn State University’s Leadership Certificate for the Pennsylvania Association of Senior Centers.
