Older Adults and Mental Health: Depression and Anxiety

Who should attend?
Anyone who works with people with dementia in acute care, assisted living, home, and long term care, including hospital and nursing home administrators, social workers, nurses, certified nursing assistants, rehabilitation therapists, staff educators, and other direct care staff.

Program Description:

Learn the basic facts about normal aging, developmental tasks, and common life events of the elderly

• Learn to describe the basic facts about depression
• Learn how to screen, assess, and diagnose depression
• Learn how to treat depression

Objectives:

• Learn to describe the basic facts about anxiety disorders
• Learn how to screen, assess, and diagnose anxiety disorders
• Learn how to treat anxiety disorder
• Learn how to prevent anxiety disorder
• Learn how to prevent depression

Instructors:

Steve Weiss, RN, MSN, CRNP-BC, BA
Steve has been a nurse for over 22 years, mostly helping patients with mental illness on inpatient units, detox units, home care, and long term care. He received his Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification in 2008, MSN from Drexel University in 2008, and from Temple University a BSN in 1986 and a BA, with a major in psychology, in 1983. For the past 5 years, he has been the Education Coordinator at the long-term care facility operated by the County of Bucks. He is familiar with state and federal long-term care regulations. He had experience with dementia throughout his career. In the 1980s, he participated in research on a new drug at the time called Aricept at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He helped patients with dementia and their caregivers at home, in assisted living, and long term care facilities. His grandmother and grandfather had dementia.

Marci Bisset, MSN, CRNP, PMHNP-BC
Marci has worked with patients with mental illness for 30 years, first as a psychiatric aide, then as a nurse on inpatient units, outpatient programs, home care and long term care. She received her Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification in 2008, MSN from Drexel University in 2008, BSN from Holy Family University in 1986 and BA in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University in 1978. Since 2000 she has worked as a Behavioral Health Therapist at Cheltenham-York Rd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, part of the New Courtland Network. She has helped staff, patients, and families cope with and manage dementia and associated problems in various settings including inpatient psychiatric care, home care and long term care. Her grandmother had Alzheimer’s dementia.
