Designing for the iPhone/iPad Platform

Learn how to design and code "mobile Web apps," the type of website targeted for the version of the Safari browser used in the iPhone/iPad OS, and also the Silk browser used in the Kindle Fire. We will take what is called the "responsive design approach," in which one code base adjusts automatically to the device's display size and orientation. Topics covered will include the touch interface, coding cross-platform video, best typographical practices, image optimization, bandwidth reduction, the best Javascript libraries to use, and a general introduction to general-purpose mobile versions of existing Web sites. (This course will not cover iPhone apps coded with Objective-C or other compiled apps). The course will also introduce the simulators needed for testing and coding, such as the iOS SDK, the Android SDK, and other free tools and frameworks.

Adobe Lightroom (Digital Photography using Adobe Lightroom)

Whatever your interest in photography, Adobe Lightroom is the go-to tool for photographers looking to develop a powerful and efficient workflow for organizing and optimizing images. Working hands on with a professional photographer who has extensive experience working with the software, this class will cover the whole process from importing and organizing photos to making basic tonal and color adjustments, local adjustments, special effects, digital slideshows, and finally the preparation of files for various outputs including social media sites and print.

Participants should have access to a digital camera (preferably a DSLR) that is capable of capturing RAW files. This class is open to photographers of all skill levels, but please note that this is primarily a software class - though some camera functions will be covered during class time it is not designed to be a shooting or critique class.

Join Penn State and Abington Art Center as we team up for a class in Digital Photography. This class will introduce both beginning and intermediate level students how to edit, highlight and dramatize their digital photographs through a variety of computer processing techniques. You'll be learning the aesthetics of photography and to better use your digital camera as you head out to capture the world around you.

Abington Art Center was founded in 1939 as the Old York Road Art Guild. Located on 27 acres in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, the Art Center hosts workshops and classes for students of all ages and presents exhibitions, an outdoor Sculpture Park, and programming designed to make art accessible and fun for everyone.

Introduction to Pod Casting and V-Casting

This course will provide a practical and hands on approach for users who want to begin producing podcasts and video podcasts (V-Casts). Podcasting has been an excellent medium to advertise, inform, and entertain. This course will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills, to record audio % video, edit your content, add effects, and upload your podcasts and V casts to the web. There will be a heavy emphasis on the iLife software (iMovie & Garage Band), but Windows based alternatives will be explored as well.

Photoshop For the World Wide Web

Students can learn how to use Photoshop and ImageReady to create, edit, and optimize images for the World Wide Web. Topics covered will include color on the Web, transparency, banners and picture text, scanning techniques, basic design principles, and several advanced techniques. Among these will be animation, rollovers, image slicing, and actions. Students will create a final project consisting of a series of Web pages incorporating graphics created during the class.

Dreamweaver

Designed for students who want to learn how to design, create, and implement professional web pages. Students can learn to create full-featured Web sites using Macromedia Dreamweaver. Specifically, this course will cover the use of templates, frames, forms, Javascript mouseovers, and multimedia in web pages. This course will focus on designing, creating, and uploading a multipage web site.
PREREQUISITE:HTML or XHTML, JavaScripting helpful

Cold Fusion

Introduction to ColdFusion MX 7 requires no previous knowledge or experience with server-side Web application development. This course will cover the following topics: How the ColdFusion MX 7 web server functions; The basics of the CFML (ColdFusion Markup Language); Outputting dynamic content; Form validation and the server-side processing of forms; Writing re-usable code; The basics of SQL (Structured Query Language); Manipulating a database with ColdFusion; Maintaining session state; Writing conditional code.

Designed for students who have solid knowledge of HTML. This course explains JavaScript and its uses to create HTML applets such as display messages and scrolling text banners; access URLs from a list; and validate the user-entered HTML form data.
