SAT Preparation Course (Verbal)

Students can strengthen vocabulary and grammar skills as the new test demands. The course will also focus on the ability to develop and support a position in writing the required essay. Test-taking strategies will be explored and practice tests given. Students are required to buy the latest edition of Barron’s How to Prepare for the SAT I and bring it along with a notebook to class the first day.
SAT Preparation Course (Math)

Reviews basic concepts in number theory, algebra and geometry. Also addresses basic test taking strategies: how to pace yourself, when to guess, how to approach multiple choice questions and answer open-ended questions. Students are required to buy the latest edition of Barron’s How to Prepare for the SAT I and bring it, along with a calculator and notebook, to class the first day.

Learn how to make informed decisions: avoiding the pitfalls, thinking like a test-taker and deciding whether to guess. Each class will cover some math and verbal testing. The verbal part can prepare you for the sentence completions, improve your vocabulary, and teach you to use the test itself to increase your reading comprehension. Improve your math score by developing strategies that help you select and produce correct answers for open-ended math problems.
NOTE: The PSAT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students are required to buy the latest edition of Barron’s How to Prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT, a calculator, and a notebook to bring to the first day of class.
Getting Into College: Planning Begins in the Ninth Grade, A College Counseling Seminar for 9th and 10th Graders

Getting into college is more competitive than ever. Find out what you need to know to demystify the college application process. Learn what makes a stellar applicant and how to become one, how grades and standardized test scores are generally weighted by different types of colleges, how to create a resumé and how to develop a balanced and realistic list of target schools. You will receive a packet of information including a scheduling calendar, helpful reminders, recommended web sites, books, and summer activity lists. This workshop runs in early October.
Learn the “Write Stuff” for the SAT and College Application Essay!
ENGL 6000A-001 (0.8 CEUs)
Writing clearly and expressively is a major focus of the college application process. Not only has the SAT been revised to include an essay section, but most colleges require at least one essay to be included with your application. This workshop will discuss: how to structure the SAT essay, including creating a thesis statement, formulating topic sentences, composing transitions, writing a clear introduction and conclusion, and doing all of this in the allotted 25 minutes! Additionally, choosing a topic for the college essay as well as writing and polishing it will be discussed. Students will have the opportunity to write practice SAT and application essays. Individual evaluations and suggestions will be provided.

Starting college in the fall? With our in-depth course, you can learn skills necessary for college success. Topics include test-taking and note-taking techniques, practical methods for approaching objective and essay tests, efficient studying, writing and composing effective prose. Please bring a notebook with you the first night of class.
