Service and Community Learning: An Opportunity for Intercultural Development
This workshop focuses on language and cultural issues that arise during community-based projects, highlighting ways to raise awareness of language use for civic engagement. Accounts of intercultural communication in community-based educational settings will be shared and discussed. Participants will gain a clear understanding of language use and culture meanings that take place during collaboration and how these can be best cultivated as part of students’ service learning experiences.
Facilitator: James Perren, Ed.D., MA: TESOL
James has taught service learning, teacher training, EFL/ESL, technology for educators and public speaking in a variety of domestic and international settings. James has published on intercultural teacher training, community-based language education and EFL as well as presenting academic topics in Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, Brazil, and the USA.
