CILC 2008 Summer Institute for Educators

Addressing the Needs of Generation 1.5 Writers in your Classroom

This workshop will explore practical activities and approaches that allow Generation 1.5 (immigrant) students to develop organization, detail and cognitive skills in their academic writing. Grammar-for-writing and some other special challenges these students face will be discussed, and participants will receive a list of online resources for teaching Generation 1.5.

Facilitator: Deb Ousey, MA TESOL

Deb teaches developmental writing, grammar and an introduction to college class at Penn State Brandywine (formerly called Penn State Delaware County). She teaches in the campus' American Studies Course Cluster for Generation 1.5 students, and has co-authored an article on the Introduction to College course she helped develop on the campus. She is currently collaborating on a book proposal for a text on how to teach Gen 1.5 developmental college students.
