Penn State Abington Sports Medicine
Penn State Abington provides two full time, licensed Athletic Trainers (ATC) for student athlete medical care and prevention. They are required to maintain Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine Licensure.
Julie McNulty (right) has been at Penn State Abington since 2007. She has both her bachelor’s and her master’s degrees in Athletic Training. Neil Hoffman joined the Athletic Training staff in 2010. He holds a bachelor’s in athletic training and a master’s degree in exercise science.
Penn State Abington’s athletic trainers first concern is the health and welfare of our student athletes. As part of that care, they will provide the following services:
-
Maintenance of a medical history file on every varsity student athlete cleared to compete for Penn State Abington;
-
Regular training room hours for consultation and rehabilitation;
-
When a student athlete is injured in a team sanctioned practice or competition, they will provide immediate care and/or referral of how to manage that injury.
-
Physician referrals will be made through Penn State Abington’s network of physicians, physical therapists and orthopedic surgeons. Should a student athlete wish to see their family doctor, return to competition must be coordinated with a Penn State Abington ATC.
-
Assistance with managing medical bills. Penn State Abington requires that all medical bills be submitted to your primary insurance first; once an Explanation of
Benefits (EOB) has been generated, please bring the remaining balance and EOBs to a Penn State Abington ATC who will submit it to Penn State University’s Athletic Insurance Provider for payment.
Penn State Abington ATC’s will provide rehabilitation routines on a space and time available basis. Should you injury require the services and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist, the ATC’s will be happy to provide you with a referral.
Due to Federal regulations involving patient privacy (HIPPA) and student privacy (FERPA), your injuries and recovery process will not be discussed with anyone without your consent. Your coach will be kept informed of your progress and your compliance with ATC recommendations and guidelines. Each team has different rules when an athlete chooses not to meet the ATC directives for rehabbing an injury. Please speak with your coach regarding team guidelines.
All athletes are required to have a physical once per year. In addition, all athletes must make the ATCs aware of any changes in your primary insurance information.
No team may practice or compete without an ATC present or nearby as defined by the Director of Athletics. Athletes who are injured outside of their declared practice and competition seasons are generally not covered by Penn State’s athletic insurance.
