Penn State Abington hires new golf coach
Penn State Abington Director of Athletics Dr. Karen Weaver announced the hiring of Nelson Wax as new men’s golf coach, effective July 1, 2011. Wax replaces Ed Decker, who stepped down in April after serving as head coach for three years.
Wax, a full time career services counselor at Penn State Abington, brings passion and experience to the position. The son of a champion golfer, Wax focuses on balancing the fundamentals of the game with good course management strategies. An accomplished golfer, Wax has particular strengths in approach shots and the short game. His coaching style is one of identifying and fine tuning the personal strengths of each athlete.
Wax hopes to build on the momentum of the previous year, which saw the team capture its first invitational title at Rutgers-Camden and finish third overall in the North Eastern Athletic Conference championships. The squad returns a talented core group in 2011-12, including John Haldis,(Jr) Chris Schofield (Jr), Tim Anderson(Jr), Steffen Schenkenberger (Jr), Keenan Moriarity (So).
Wax had this to say about his appointment as head coach: “I look forward to developing players as athletes and students, helping them to put themselves in the best position to succeed. My approach to coaching is similar to my career counseling modality - I work with individuals to identify and fine tune their personal strengths, while addressing and overcoming challenges.”
Penn State Abington opens up the fall season competition September 14 at Westover Country Club in a match hosted by Chestnut Hill College.
Penn State Abington, a four year college within the Penn State University System, has completed its second year of NCAA Division III status. Offering 14 varsity sports, it is a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
