Penn State Abington has named Keith Brandon as its first-ever head men’s lacrosse coach. The school previously announced it was beginning a varsity men’s lacrosse program in Spring 2009 –the first time in school history.

Keith Brandon has an impressive athletic resume. A native of Hempstead, N.Y., Brandon attended Hobart College and was a two-sport athlete in football and lacrosse. He was named both Captain and All American in football and played defense for the Statesman lacrosse team. Upon graduation, Brandon accepted an assistantship at St. Lawrence University in football and lacrosse. During his time at St. Lawrence, the Saints’ lacrosse teams were ranked #16 in the nation and had back-to-back twelve win seasons. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Education in 2004.

For the past two seasons, Brandon has been the assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Swarthmore College, focusing on team defense, face-offs, recruiting and scouting. He currently works as an art teacher and chair of the art department at De La Salle in Towne, a nonprofit organization located in Center City, Philadelphia that provides alternative day treatment to adjudicated males ages 13-18.

“We are very pleased to announce Keith’s hire,” said Director of Athletics Karen Weaver. “From all accounts he is truly one of the rising young stars in the world of men’s lacrosse. He has been mentored by some of the best coaches in the sport and he is really a student of the game.”

Penn State Abington announced January 3, 2008, it would sponsor men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse beginning in the 2008-09 academic year. This brings the total number of varsity programs to eleven.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer two more sports, especially ones as popular in Suburban Philadelphia as men’s and women’s lacrosse”, said Karen Weaver, Director of Athletics.

“Lacrosse has strong roots in Pennsylvania—there are a number of youth and developmental programs within a 30 mile radius of campus as well as current students on our campus who tell us this will be a great fit,” said Weaver.“We believe it is a great fit because of the strong academic profile that lacrosse players traditionally bring, and it fulfills a well established demand in our own service area.”
