Student-Athletes honored at annual sports banquet

On Saturday, May 9th the Penn State Abington Athletics department hosted their 40th annual Wes Olsen Sports Banquet.  This was the day for all of our student-athletes to be honored for their hardwork and dedication to their teams, to Penn State Abington and most importantly to themselves.  Although all of our student-athletes excel in what they do below is a list of those that were honored for their outstanding performances both on and off the playing field:

Special Awards

Andrew Eisele Memorial Award  (Soccer)
The Andrew Eisele Memorial Award was established in 1979 in honor of Andy Eisele, Penn State Ogontz varsity soccer player in 1977 and 1978.  Andy’s teams won two Commonwealth Campus Soccer Championships (1978 team captain) with a combined record of 17-1-3.  Andy’s leadership, attitude, character, and dedication to soccer set him apart as an extraordinary athlete.  Andy Eisele died in a tragic accident at University Park during his junior year.  The award is presented annually to honor the Penn State Abington varsity soccer player who demonstrates leadership, attitude, teamwork, character, and dedication to soccer.

Al Miles Memorial Tennis Award
The Al Miles Memorial Tennis Award honors our departed Penn State Abington Associate Professor of English/Humanities and faculty member from 1966 to 1991.  Al Miles coached varsity tennis at Penn State Abington from 1975 to 1989.  A gentlemen and scholar Al Miles exemplified the finest qualities of a college educator.  His love of teaching and tennis made him an inspiration to his students and a great coach.  During his tenure Dr. Miles' teams won nine conference and numerous individual tennis championships.

The criteria for the Al Miles Memorial Tennis Award includes; a full time student, completion of two semesters, 3.0 GPA with excellence in English/Humanities and a demonstrated interest in learning and teaching the game of tennis.

2008 - Glen Seeberger

 

The Fred Striet Memorial Award
The Fred Striet Memorial Award was established in 1993 to honor Fred Striet, a Penn State Ogontz varsity baseball player.  Fred pitched the only perfect game in Penn State Ogontz baseball history.  His collegiate athletic career was cut short when he died in a car accident returning home from University Park in 1992.  Established by his parents, the Fred Striet  Memorial is presented to a student athlete who demonstrates “leadership and character, pride in academics, and growth and perfection through sport.”

2009 – James Delaney

 

Team Academic Award
Presented to the Intercollegiate Athletic Team whose members hold the highest collective grade point average after the fall semester.

2008-2009 – Softball  (2.96)

 

Wes Olsen Memorial Scholar Athletes
The Wes Olsen Memorial Scholar Athlete Award (renamed in 1998-99) was initiated
in 1980 at Penn State Abington (then Ogontz) by Athletic Director Wes Olsen to honor the male and female intercollegiate athletes with the highest cumulative GPA after completion of two semesters.  The recipients must have participated as an intercollegiate athlete during that current school year (year the award is given).  The award may be received only once.
               
Women  - 2009 – Danielle Regan (3.51)
Men – 2009 – Glen Seeberger (3.70)

 

Outstanding Athlete Awards
            The oldest and most prestigious award in Penn State Abington College history honors the outstanding male and female athletes.  These awards honor two student athletes with distinguished intercollegiate athletic careers. These student athletes must demonstrate the characteristics commensurate with the Penn Abington College athletic tradition of leadership, character, and morals.  Players are nominated by their coaches.
