Athletics

Abington, PA – The Penn State Abington Athletics Department is pleased to announce that senior Sara Petroski (Trevose, PA / Archbishop Wood) is the 2010 recipient of the Andrew Eisele Memorial Award.  Petroski becomes the first female recipient of this award since its inception in 1979.

Sara went through two winless seasons in 2008 and 2009 before the program turned around this year and went 8-9 overall and 5-6 in the NEAC, receiving the last playoff spot in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships. Petroski’s determination and leadership earned her captain in both 2009 and 2010 as well as  a spot on the NEAC Third Team All-Conference in 2010.   She is a two sport athlete that has been on the Director’s List twice.  The Director’s List features student-athletes from all 14 varsity teams with a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher.

“Sara was an easy selection for this award because she was a true leader throughout her career here at Penn State Abington.  I am proud of her and all of her accomplishments both in the classroom and on the field.  We will certainly miss her,“ said Head Coach David Castellanos.

The Andrew Eisele Memorial Award was established in 1979 in honor of Andy Eisele, Penn State Ogontz varsity soccer player in 1977 and 1978.  Andy’s teams won two Commonwealth Campus Soccer Championships (1978 team captain) with a combined record of 17-1-3.  Andy’s leadership, attitude, character, and dedication to soccer set him apart as an extraordinary athlete.  Andy Eisele died in a tragic accident at University Park during his junior year.  The award is presented annually to honor the Penn State Abington varsity soccer player who demonstrates leadership, attitude, teamwork, character, and dedication to soccer.

Penn State Abington is in its second year of NCAA Division III provisional status. The Nittany Lions are members of the North Eastern Athletic Conference and the ECAC.
