Benedict registers 3rd shutout of season


September 17, 2011 – Abington, PA - The Penn State Abington women’s soccer team hosted NEAC opponent College of St. Elizabeth today at UGH.  The Nittany Lions shut out the Eagles 6-0 as they improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the NEAC while the College of St. Elizabeth dropped to 1-5 overall  and 1-2 in the conference.

Penn State Abington continued their strong play on the field as they continued to attack on offense as they had 28 shots (15 SOG) and 5 corner kicks.  The Nittany Lions defense continued to play strong as they held the College of St. Elizabeth to only 5 shots (3 SOG) with 2 corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions had five different players score today.   In the first half, sophomore Kaitlin Gossner (Philadelphia, PA / Bishop McDevitt) had her first goal of the season 3 minutes into the game when she scored from the far right wing.  Junior Brittany Middleton (Chalftont, PA / Central Bucks South) scored her fourth goal of the season at the 41:19 mark on an assist by freshman Samantha Whalen (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks South) giving Penn State Abington a 2-0 lead going into halftime.  

In the second half of play the Nittany Lions scored their 3rd goal of the game at the 56:00mark when junior Brittany Palmer (Philadelphia, PA / Archbishop Ryan) scored her 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Middleton.  The Nittany Lions made it 4-0 when Middleton scored an unassisted goal in the box at the 74:54mark.  Sophomore Katelyn Haas (Huntingdon Valley, PA / Lower Moreland) scored her first collegiate career goal at the 82:30 mark to give her Nittany Lions a commanding 5-0 lead.  Freshman Menel Tlili (Philadelphia, PA / GAMP) also scored her first collegiate career goal and the final goal of the game at the 83:23 mark, which was assisted by Gossner. 

In the net for Penn State Abington was freshman Gabrielle Benedict (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks West) who registered her 3rd collegiate career shutout and had 3 saves on the day.

The women’s soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, September 22, 2011 when they travel to Lancaster, PA for a NEAC Conference game against Lancaster Bible College.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
