FORMER UPPER DUBLIN CHAMPIONSHIP COACH TAKES REIGNS AT PENN STATE ABINGTON
Abington, PA – Penn State Abington’s Athletics Director Karen Weaver announced that David Sheaffer has been named the new head women’s tennis coach. Sheaffer led the Upper Dublin High School Cardinals to league championships for five seasons. The girl’s varsity team captured the SOL Freedom Division Championship in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 and the boy’s varsity team captured the SOL Freedom Division Championship in 2004.
Sheaffer comes to Penn State Abington with a wealth of knowledge of the game of tennis. He has been an instructor at the Philadelphia Area Tennis District, Gold Cup Program since January of 2008 as well as an instructor at the Fort Washington Swim and Tennis Club, Sharks program since 2004.
“We are pleased to add David to our coaching staff,” said Weaver. “What impressed me the most about David is his ethical approach both on and off the court. He will use the tennis program to assist our student athletes with learning how to make the right calls on the court and in life.”
Although this is Sheaffer’s first collegiate coaching experience he is anxious to build and create something special at Penn State Abington. “I’m excited. I’m eager to help grow the tennis programs into traditional D-III competitive, strong programs in the next couple of years,” Sheaffer stated. “My first goal and most important goal is to develop relationships with the kids that are returning from this past year’s team and double the number of players on the roster. I am just hoping that I could build something special here like Bob (retiring coach Bob Barton) was able to do.”
Sheaffer played tennis at Messiah College, a NCAA division III program who competes in the Middle Atlantic States Conference (MAC). While at Messiah he was a member of the MAC Championship team in 1995.
