Men’s Tennis lose season opener to Eastern
Sept. 19, 2009 – St. David’s, PA – The Penn State Abington men’s tennis team played in their first match of their inaugural season this morning in St. David’s, PA. The played a tough match against Eastern University where they lost 3-6, after they saw two of their matches go three sets.
In singles play, freshman Nigel Hopkinson (Philadelphia, PA / Roman Catholic) defeated Eastern’s Tyler Hoagland in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 and 7-5; getting his first collegiate win. In doubles play, Penn State Abington won 2 of the 3 matches. The #2 doubles play of freshman Matthew Stainthorpe (Cheltenham, PA / Cheltenham) and sophomore Artem Busorgina (Philadelphia, PA / Archbishop Ryan) beat Eastern’s duo of Dan Wilson and Josh Hall 8 sets to 6 and getting their first collegiate win and in #3 doubles play Abington’s Hopkinson and freshman Matthew Wolff (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) beat Eastern’s Tyler Hoagland and Chris Clark 8-5 also receiving their first collegiate win.
The men’s tennis team will be back in action on Sunday, September 27th when they play host to St. Mary’s College (MD). The match is schedule to start at 1:0 0 p.m.
