Penn State Abington Men’s Soccer shutout Penn State Brandywine
September 15, 2009 – Abington, PA – The Penn State Abington men’s soccer team picked up their first win of the season with a 5-0 shutout of Penn State Brandywine today at Huntingdon Road Fields.
Penn State Abington out-shot Penn State Brandywine 28-5 with only three of Brandywine’s shots were on goal.
Freshman Alix Edwards (Kingston Jamaica, Bensalem) got Abington started by scoring his first career goal in the 32nd minute (31:35) assisted by sophomore Matthew Howard (Rockledge, PA / Abington Senior).
Howard then scored at the 75th minute (74:57) of the 2nd period. Howard had a shot that hit the crossbar and he was able to follow his own shot and head the ball in the net for his first career goal.
Junior Anthony Root (Pipersville, PA / Pennridge) scored his first goal of the season on a direct kick in the 82nd minute (81:39).
Junior Brian Martinowich (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) scored his first goal of the season on a header at the 88th minute (87:45). Martinowich headed the ball off of a shot that hit the post by freshman Bobby Asifuah (Monrovia, Liberia / Fels). Asifuah scored his first career goal in the 89th minute (88:39)
The defense for Abington was just as remarkable as the offense. They held Brandywine to just 5 shots throughout the game.
In goal for Abington was freshman Daniel Carmack (California, MD / Leaonardtown) who registered his first career shutout. He finished with three saves. Brandywine’s Justin Matkov had ten saves.
Penn State Abington is back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Utica, NY to take on SUNY-IT. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
