Baseball Advances to NEAC West Championship Game

April 30, 2011 – Rome, NY – The Penn State Abington baseball team played, for the second time today, Gallaudet University in their third game of the day in the NEAC West Baseball Championship.  The Nittany Lions defeated the Bison 5-4 to advance to the NEAC West Baseball Championship Game against Penn State Berks.

The Nittany Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd when freshman Matt McAllister (Warminster, PA / Archbishop Wood) hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring sophomore Mike Kerns (Archbishop Wood), who got on base when he hit a double.

The Bison was able to take score 2 runs for a 2-1 lead in the top of the 3rd inning.  

However, Penn State Abington was able to tie it up in the 5th inning when McCouch grounded out to the shortstop scoring sophomore Dustin Kology (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge).

In the seventh inning, Gallaudet scored 2 runs to take a 4-2 lead.  The Nittany Lions were quick to respond as they also scored 2 runs to tie it at 4-4.   Abington scored when senior Enrique Meletiche (Philadelphia, PA / W.B. Saul) hit a single to center field scoring both Kology and McAllister.

Penn State Abington was able to hold Gallaudet scoreless for the remaining 2 innings before the Nittany Lions scored in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior Kevin Szafranksi (Bensalem, PA) scored on an error by the third baseman as they were able to take the 5-4 win away from Gallaudet

Leading the way for Penn State Abington was Kerns who went 2-for-3 and had 1 run.  Meletiche also played well as he went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

On the mound for Penn State Abington was freshman Anthony DiVincenzo (Philadelphia, PA / GAMP) who pitched 6.2 innings allowing 9 hits and 4 runs.   Sophomore Robert Morak (Abington, PA) pitched 2.1 innings as he picked up the win allowing 2 hits and no runs.

Up next for the baseball team is their first ever appearance in the NEAC West Baseball Championship game.  Abington will play Penn State Berks on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. for the championship.
