Baseball ends NEAC play against Penn State Harrisburg
April 25, 2011 – Abington, PA – The Penn State Abington baseball team hosted Penn State Harrisburg today in a doubleheader, in their last NEAC conference game of the season. The Nittany Lions of Abington swept the Nittany Lions of Harrisburg (16-0 & 7-5) as Abington finished their conference play with a 12-2 record, tied with SUNY-IT, and Harrisburg fell to 4-10 in the NEAC.
In game one, Abington came ready to play as they scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first to take a quick 11-0 lead. Abington then scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd, 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd and their final run of the game came in the bottom of the 4th as they went on to get an easy 16-0 win.
On the mound for the Nittany Lions of Abington was freshman Matt McAllister (Warminster, PA / Archbishop Wood) who pitched 3 innings allowing only 4 hits as he registered his fourth win of the season.
Penn State Abington received impressive play from several players. Sophomore Tom Boyd (Churchville, PA / Council Rock South) lead the way as he went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 4 RBIs. Freshman Wil Erskine (North Penn) was 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI. Sophomore Mike Kerns (Arhbishop Wood) went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Sophomore Michael Corrigan (Warminster, PA / William Tennent) went 2-for-3 and had 2 runs and 1 RBI while junior Mark McCouch (Hatboro-Horsham, PA / Gwynedd Mercy) was 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.
In game two, Penn State Abington scored in the bottom of the first when Erskine hit a double scoring McCouch, who reached base on an error by the shortstop, to take an early 1-0 lead.
Abington scored their second run of the game in the 2nd inning when McAllister, who singled to get on base, scored on an error by the first baseman.
The Nittany Lions of Abington added 2 more runs in the fourth inning, when senior Kevin Szafranksi (Bensalem) hit a double scoring both Boyd and McAllister to take a 4-0 lead.
Penn State Harrisburg was able to take a 5-4 lead after they scored 3 runs in the fifth inning and 2 runs in the sixth inning.
Penn State Abington quickly responded as they score 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-5 win. McCouch hit a single scoring senior Enrique Meletiche (Philadelphia, PA / W.B. Saul). Szafrankski scored when he stole home and Erskine hit a single scoring McCouch.
On the mound for Penn State Abington was sophomore Daniel Hill (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill West) who pitched 4 innings allowing only 2 hits and had 3 strikeouts. Freshman Anthony DiVincenzo (Philadelphia, PA / GAMP) pitched 1 inning allowing 4 hits and 3 runs. Picking up the win for Abington was freshman Brian Camp (Cheltenham, PA / Cheltenham) who pitched in the fifth inning as he allowed 3 hits and 2 run. McCouch pitched the sixth inning, getting the save for the game, allowing 0 hits and 0 runs.
Leading the way for the Nittany Lions of Abington was Erskine who went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs. McAllister also did well as he went 2-for-2 and had 2 runs.
The baseball team returns to action in the NEAC Championships in Utica, NY, hosted by SUNY-IT. The NEAC Championships will start on Friday, April 29, 2011.
