Penn State Abington Plays in The Ripken Experience
March 4-6, 2011 - Myrtle Beach, SC - The Penn State Abington baseball team travelled to Myrtle Beach, SC during spring break to participate in The Ripken Experience. The Nittany Lions went 1-3 during their time in South Carolina.
On day one of The Ripken Experience, Penn State faced Allegheny College. The Nittany Lions fell in a low scoring game 1-3.
On the second day at Myrtle Beach, Penn State Abington played two games. In the first game they faced Johnson & Wales University. Senior Enrique Meletiche (Philadelphia, PA/W.B. Saul) led the Nittany Lions with 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 RBI, and a walk while sophomore Dustin Kology (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) went 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 walks. Unfortunately, Penn State Abington lost a close game 6-8.
Penn State Abington faced Wilkes University in the second game of the day. Freshman Matt McCallister (Archbishop Wood) pitched a no-hitter in the game as the Nittany Lions won their first game of the season, 4-0. McCallister pitched all 9 innings striking out 7 and only allowed 2 men on base, 1 walk and 1 hit batter. The offense was led by Kology with 3 hits, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Hill also had 2 RBI’s for the Nittany Lions.
The final day in South Carolina saw the Nittany Lions play Swarthmore College. The Nittany Lions offense exploded scoring 13 runs in the game. Sophomore Mike Kerns (Archbishop Wood) led the team with 3 hits including a home run, 3 runs, and 4 RBI’s. Junior Mark McCouch (Hatboro-Horsham, PA/Gwynedd Mercy) had 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s for Penn State while freshman Kyle Fake (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) had 1 hit, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI’s.
Up next for the Nittany Lions is a trip to Fayetteville, NC to play Methodist College in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 4 pm.
