Nittany Lions lose to Scarlett Raiders in a Non-Conference Game
March 2, 2011 – Flemington, NJ -The Penn State Abington baseball team traveled across the river to take on Rutgers-Newark at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ in a non-conference game. The Nittany Lions lost a close game to the Scarlett Raiders by a score of 7-10 and fell to 0-3 overall while Rutgers-Newark improved to 2-1.
Rutgers-Newark was able to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead over Penn State Abington after the first two innings. The Nittany Lions were able to score in the top of the third when senior Enrique Meletiche (Philadelphia, PA / W.B. Saul) grounded out to 2b but was able to get an RBI when sophomore Dustin Kology (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) scored. The Scarlett-Raiders scored in the bottom of the third and fourth to make it 5-1 over the Nittany Lions.
The fourth inning is when the bats came alive for Penn State Abington as they were able to score four runs to tie it at 5 runs. Sophomore Mike Kerns (Archbishop Wood) singled and received an RBI when junior Mark McCouch (Hatboro Horsham, PA / Gwynedd Mercy) scored to make it 2-5, in favor of Ruters-Newark. Meletiche stepped up to the plate and hit a double scoring Kerns making it 3-5. Sophomore Daniel Hill (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill West) was batting next with 2 outs and a man on base and he hit a homerun tying the game at 5.
Rutgers-Newark quickly took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth when they scored a run and then scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3 run 8-5 lead.
The Nittany Lions were able to score in the top of the seventh when Hill hit a single scoring Meletiche to bring Penn State Abington to within 2 runs, 6-8. Abington was able to hold it together defensively in the bottom of the seventh as they didn’t allow Rutgers to score.
In the top of the eighth, Penn State Abington closed it to within 1 run (7-8) when sophomore Tom Boyd (Churchville, PA / Council Rock South) was able to score on a fielder’s choice. The Nittany Lions had an opportunity to take the lead when Meletiche was at bat and the bases were loaded with two outs when he popped up to the shortstop to end the top of the eighth. It was then Rutgers-Newark’s chance at bat and they were able to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 7-10.
Meletiche lead for the Nittany Lions with 2 runs, 1 hit and 2 RBIs with 5 at-bats while Hill added 1 run, 2 hits and 3 RBIs with 5 at-bats.
On the mound for the Nittany Lions was freshman Anthony DiVicenzo (Philadelphia, PA / GAMP) who pitched 2 innings and allowed 4 hits and 3 runs. Freshman Brian Camp (Cheltenham, PA / Cheltenham) pitched 4 innings and allowed 8 hits, 5 runs and 2 walks as he gets his first loss of the season. Freshman Kevin Faber (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) pitched one inning and had 1 walk while junior Mark McCouch (Hatboro-Horsham, PA / Gwynedd Mercy) also pitched an inning and allowed 2 hits, 2 runs and had 2 strikeouts.
Penn State Abington had one more chance at the plate but went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth as they lost a tough non-conference game to Rutgers-Newark.
The baseball team will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for their 2011 College Spring Training at The Ripken Experience. They will compete against Allegheny College on Friday, March 4th at 6:00 p.m.
