Baseball Has Six Selected to NEAC All-Conference

April 29, 2011 – Gansevoort, NY – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced the West Division regular season award winners in Men’s Baseball. In regular season divisional competition, the SUNY Institute of Technology and Penn State University-Abington Nittany Lions were awarded the regular season trophy for their 12-2 conference records. The Nittany Lions also had six members selected to All-Conference teams.

Senior Enrique Meletiche (Philadelphia, PA / W.B. Saul) was selected to the All-Conference First Team for his performance as a catcher. Meletiche started in 35 of 36 games he played. He had a batting average of .398, had 28 runs, 43 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 2 homeruns and 24 RBIs. His a slugging % was .537. Overall, he leads his team in putouts with 164 and was second on his team in runs scored, hits and RBIs.

Sophomore Daniel Hill (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill West) was selected to the First Team All-Conference for his play at first base. Hill played and started in 31 games where he had a batting average of..296 with 17 runs, 29 hits, 5 doubles, 7 homeruns and a team high 38 RBIs. Overall, Hill leads his team in slugging % (.561), RBIs and home runs. He is third on the team in putouts with 104.

Joining Meletich and Hill on the First Team All-Conference for his play in the outfield is sophomore Dustin Kology (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge). Kology started and played in all 35 games where he batted a .403 with 37 runs, 48 hits, 3 doubles, 1 homerun and 18 RBIs. Overall, Kology leads his team in runs scored, hits and stolen bases (36). He was second on the team with a batting average of .403. In the field, Kology was fifth in putouts with 77.

Hill was also selected to the All-Conference Second Team for his performance as a pitcher. Hill started in 9 of his 10 game appearances on the season and finished with 3-4-1. He had a 1.80 ERA while pitching 55 innings, allowing 18 runs, with 11 being earned. He held his opponents to a batting average of .243 and had a team high 55 strikeouts. However, his biggest accomplishment this season was when he pitched his second collegiate career no-hitter against Keuka College on April 3, 2011.  He had one complete game shutout, pitching seven innings while allowing no runs and striking out eight that day as Penn State Abington beat Keuka College 4-0.  Hill was selected as the NEAC West Division Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week for his accomplishment.

Freshman Will Erskine (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) was selected to the All-Conference Second Team, as well, for his play at second base. Erskine started in 28 of the 33 games he played where he batted a .307, had 24 runs, 27 hits and 14 RBIs. In the field, he had a team high 54 assists to go along with his 28 putouts. Erskine also leads his team in fielding double plays with 9.

Freshman Matt McAllister (Warminster, PA / Archbishop Wood) was selected to the Third Team All-Conference for his performance as a pitcher. McAllister started in all 8 games that he appeared finishing with a 4-2 record. He had a 2.27 ERA while pitching 47.2 innings. He allowed 41 hits and gave up 19 runs, with 12 being earned. He held his opponents to a batting average of .229 and had 38 strikeouts. His biggest accomplishment this year was when he threw a no-hitter shutout in a win over Wilkes University on March 5, 2011. He struck out 7 batters and allowed one walk. McAllister was selected to the NEAC West Division Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week for his accomplishment.

Joining McAllister on the Third Team All-Conference is junior Mark McCouch (Hatboro-Horsham, PA / Gwynedd Mercy) for his play at shortstop. McCouch started in 32 of the 33 games he played. He batted a .323, had 24 runs, 32 hits, 3 doubles, a team high 2 triples and 17 RBIs. As a shortsop, McCouch had 53 assists and 43 putouts.

The Nittany Lions of Abington received a #2 seed in the NEAC West Division Baseball Tournament where they will play the #3 seeded Gallaudet University on Saturday, April 30th at 9:30 a.m.   The tournament is being hosted by SUNY-IT who received the #1 seed after a 12-2 regular season conference record.
