ESL Certificate Program - How Do I Apply?

Please begin by creating a Friends of Penn State account. The application will ask if you have taken anything at Penn State before and if you have not, you will be taken to the Friends of Penn State site where you will fill out the application for a Friends of Penn State access account.

The Friends of Penn State access account is NOT the graduate certificate application but it will allow you access to the graduate certificate application. Once you have created the Friends of Penn State account you can proceed with the application.

Graduate Certificate Application

Individuals seeking admission to this program must complete and submit the Penn State Graduate School online application. Select "Certificate Admission" for the application type, select Abington campus from the campus drop-down menu and choose "English as a Second Language Program Specialist and Leadership" as the certificate.

A non-refundable fee of $65 is required.

If you are ready to proceed to the application but have NOT read the Graduate School requirements, please visit that website.

If you have read the Graduate School and program requirements and are ready to apply, proceed to the application.

Prerequisites/Admission Requirements

For admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must hold either (1) a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or (2) a tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution. This degree must be from an officially recognized degree-granting institution in the country in which it operates.

English Proficiency — The language of instruction at Penn State is English. All international applicants must take and submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with some exceptions. Minimum test scores and exceptions are found in the English Proficiency section on the Graduate School "How to Apply" page.
