Baseball picks up 2 wins against Lancaster Bible

March 28, 2011- Abington, PA- The Penn State Abington baseball team played Lancaster Bible College at Alverthorpe Park in Jenkintown, PA. The Nittany Lions won both games of the non-conference doubleheader (10-4 & 5-3). Penn State Abington improved to 4-10 while the Chargers dropped to 7-7 overall.

In the first game, the Nittany Lions used a huge second inning to take control of the game. Sophomore Michael Corrigan (Warminster, PA/ William Tennent), freshman Henry Rosenbloom (Elkins Park, PA/Council Rock South), sophomore Dustin Kology (Philadelphia, PA/ Father Judge), and senior Enrique Meletiche (Philadelphia, PA/ W.B. Saul) all picked up an RBI in the inning. Sophomore Dan Hill (Cherry Hill, NJ/ Cherry Hill West) finished the big inning with a bases loaded single picking up 2 RBI’s.

The Nittany Lions offense added another run in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI single by Kology. Penn State Abington led 7-0 after three innings.

Lancaster Bible scored 4 runs in the sixth inning but the Nittany Lions offense came out and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles from Meletiche and Corrigan to take a 10-4 lead.

The Chargers were unable to score in the top of the seventh and the Nittany Lions secured the 10-4 victory.

Penn State Abington was led by Corrigan with 3 hits and 3 RBI’s. Hill reached base every time he was up, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI’s, a walk, and a run scored. Kology and Meletiche both had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.

Freshman Anthony DiVincenzo (Philadelphia, PA/ GAMP) started for Penn State Abington. He pitched 5 strong innings allowing only 2 hits and striking out 4. Freshman Kevin Faber (Philadelphia, PA/ Father Judge) and junior Mark McCouch (Hatboro-Horsham, PA/ Gwynedd Mercy) each pitched an inning in relief for the Nittany Lions.

Lancaster Bible scored the first 3 runs of the game in game 2, leading 3-0 after the second inning.

After being held hitless through the first 3 innings the Nittany Lion offense put together 5 hits to score 5 runs in the fourth inning. Hill got Penn State Abington on the scoreboard with a big 2 run home run. Fresshman Wil Erskine (North Penn) added an RBI double and senior Kevin Szafranski (Bensalem) and Rosenbloom each picked up RBI singles in the five run inning. Penn State Abington took a 5-3 lead heading into the fifth.

In the sixth inning it looked like Penn State Abington would add more runs to their lead with 2 men on and no outs but the Nittany Lions were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and remained ahead of the Chargers, 5-3 lead into the seventh inning.

After holding the Chargers scoreless in the seventh inning, the Nittany Lions came away with a 5-3 win.

Hill led the Nittany Lions with a 2 run homer. Erskine, Szafranski, and Rosenbloom each had a hit, RBI, and a run scored while Meletiche added a hit and a run scored.

Sophomore Eric Galos (Brewster) picked up the win for the Nittany Lions. He pitched 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits. Sophomore Robert Morak (Abington) got a save and pitched 3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Up next, the Nittany Lions travel to Rutgers- Camden for a non-conference game on March 29, 2011. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
