Arthurian Legends and Contemporary Rap
The Arthurian legends reveal attitudes toward women, enemies, knights, and combat which have been lost in our modern urban society. This is due, at least in part, to the belief that the Arthurian literature arises from an agricultural environment with its inherent reverence for the feminine and a close attention to the cycles of nature. Contemporary urban culture is almost entirely out of touch with nature’s cycles. As a result, and so clearly evident in the lyrics of contemporary rap, women are demeaned, enemies are degraded and/or destroyed, gentility is spurned as “unmanly,” and combat without honor is glorified. Examine this contrast and its implications for our relationships with others and our individual value systems.
