The Art Program is located in the Woodland Building on Abington College’s aesthetically pleasing campus. With over 200 linear feet of display wall available year-round, artists exhibit their work in the Woodland Gallery and Library. Sculpture pedestals, frames, monitors and projectors accommodate the variety of work produced in all media concentrations. Visit Gallery and Events to find out more about exhibitions in the Program.

The Library collaborates with the program to provide access to the entire Penn State University Library System, and hosts the Media Commons, a storehouse of digital still and video cameras available for checkout.

Each media concentration in the Art Program has a dedicated instructional studio facility in Woodland. The close proximity of all studios facilitates strong collaboration and crossbreeding among media.

Drawing & Painting Studio

The Drawing and Painting Studio is a 1200 square foot ventilated room equipped with 18 professional-grade easels and 12 taborets, a large pinup board for critiques, and storage. For lectures and demonstrations, this room is equipped with a VCR monitor and screen, a laptop and a digital projector.

Printmaking & 2D Studio

This is a 975 square foot shared classroom space with storage, large work tables, a 25 X 48 Conrad etching press, drying racks, a ventilation system, and equipment for printmaking processes, bookbinding and papermaking. Printmaking focuses on intaglio etching, woodblock and linocut engraving, and experimental integration of digital and new media tactics in the printmaking process.

Sculpture & 3D Studio

This 1000 square foot dedicated studio accommodates sculpture, portfolio photography and other miscellaneous processes. It is equipped with storage, 2 large butcher-block workbenches and miscellaneous equipment for small-scale casting.

Ceramics Studio & Casting Court

This 1000 square foot dedicated studio has a large sink, 2 vented kilns, an extruder, a pug mill, 6 potter’s wheels, storage shelving and worktables. The ceramics area borders a 400 square foot enclosed courtyard used for raku firing and metal casting. Adjacent to the court, a 300 square foot wood shop containing a variety of stationary and hand tools is a facility shared by all media concentrations.

New Media Studio

This is an 800 square foot Macintosh computer laboratory with software including the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Premier, AfterEffects, etc.), AutoDesk Entertainment Creation Suite (Maya, Mudbox, MatchMover, etc.), and Macintosh software including Keynote, GarageBand, Final Cut and iMovie. There are 20 computers, laser printers, Wacom tablets, and a flat-bed scanner. New Media students have online access to the New Media Wiki produced specifically for Abington, the online training video library at lynda.com, resources through Media Commons and 10GB of web storage in Penn State’s PASS Explorer. Large-scale printing is available on-campus through a shared facility.

• Café – The Woodland Café is nearby and features artwork from the Program.
• Model Sessions – Access to modeling sessions facilitate figurative drawing and sculpting.
• Friday Studios – Each Friday, instructional studios are monitored by the Abington Art Fellow to allow easy access for independent work on projects.
• Faculty Offices – Faculty offices are easily accessible in the Woodland Building.
• Wireless – Along with the entire Penn State Abington campus, all studios have wireless access for laptops and mobile devices.
• Digital Printing – Large-scale digital printing is available in the Woodland Building.
• ACURA Projects – Undergraduate research is conducted through Abington’s ACURA program. Art faculty regularly mentor students who engage in original research on a topic related to their major or media concentration.
