Mission Statement of the Division of Social Sciences
The mission of the Social Sciences Division at Penn State Abington is to develop the next generation of competent and ethical leaders in Business, Criminal Justice, Education, and Psychological and Social Sciences. Our scholarly faculty accomplish this goal through exemplary teaching, research, and mentoring.
Students in the Division are diverse in their backgrounds, their strengths and their career aspirations but all have a goal to work directly with persons in an ever changing world. The program combines traditional pedagogy with technologically enhanced instruction, active learning methods, internship experiences, undergraduate research opportunities, and collaborative multidisciplinary approaches in a personalized environment.
Those majoring in our programs receive a solid foundation in relevant theory (historical, philosophical, and legal), as well as a thorough understanding of classic and current research, and the appropriate and ethical application of such research findings. Students develop skills in research methodology, critical thinking, writing, oral communication, and problem solving.
Students are encouraged to consider relevant minors at Penn State as well as advanced studies in graduate and professional schools, whether in an accelerated or a typical fashion, following graduation with a B.A. or a B.S. degree.
Through a comprehensive curriculum utilizing experiences inside and outside the classroom, the division fully prepares students to engage in and improve society.
